Cut off Tooling Refurbishment and Manufacturing

During the roll forming process, several different types of cut off tooling can be used to achieve the desired end product.

Cut off tooling for the roll forming line includes punches, shears, cut off dies, circular knives, and slitters.

Cutting operations can take place before rolling, or after.

Cutting before the metal is rolled can be more economical by reducing cost of cut-off dies, and allowing for hand feeding of strips. Multiple profiles can be cut without having to change the cutting tool. However, pre-cutting increases the chances of end flare and jamming the machinery.

Cutting after roll forming enables you to cut shorter pieces, and for material to be fed constantly through the machinery. However, more cut off dies are required since the roll formed products can take on a larger variety of profiles and shapes and the risk of burr is increased.

The quality of your profile can be affected when your cutting tools face wear - and you’re faced with a choice between refurbishing your cutting tools, or replacing them.

This can be determined by cost and the condition of wear on the tooling; it may make more economic sense to have a tool reconditioned, rather than replaced completely (even when considering the downtime to your machinery whilst a new tool is being manufactured and tested). However, your machinery may be more efficient if you can redesign or renovate your current worn tooling - saving you money further down the line.
